Assistant Professor of Health and Social Behavior

Background
The School of Public Health at the University of California at Berkeley invites applications for a new faculty position at the assistant professor level (tenure-track) in Health and Social Behavior. This position will be based in the Division of Community Health and Human Development, which includes programs in Health and Social Behavior, Maternal and Child Health, Public Health Nutrition, and the Joint Medical Program (UC Berkeley-UC San Francisco)
The mission of the Health and Social Behavior program is to train scholars and practitioners to 1) identify and analyze the major social, cultural, and bio-behavioral determinants of health and health behavior and 2) design, implement, and evaluate social and behavioral interventions and social policies aimed at improving community and population health.
The School of Public Health is particularly interested in candidates who have experience working with students from diverse backgrounds and a demonstrated commitment to improving access to higher education for disadvantaged students.
Qualifications
Candidates should demonstrate:
- An innovative research program in the development, implementation, and evaluation of health promotion and disease prevention programs in underserved communities
- A strong background in population health and relevant theories in social science and human development to guide health promotion and disease prevention at the individual and community levels
- Excellent research skills in areas of qualitative and/or quantitative methods
- The promise of an evolving research agenda that includes ongoing work at the intersection of mixed methods (defined here to mean an innovative integration of mixed qualitative and quantitative methods)
- Experience and commitment to teaching and mentoring of graduate students in public health
- Experience in working collaboratively with diverse community stakeholders
Candidates for this position must have a doctoral degree in anthropology, psychology, social psychology, sociology, epidemiology, public health, medicine, or a related discipline
Research Area
Open, although there is a preference for candidates who focus their research on issues related to health disparities and in particular obesity, diet/nutrition, and/or HIV/AIDS.
Description of Duties
Conduct research in the design, implementation, and evaluation of health promotion and disease prevention programs in underserved communities. Assist in fostering research and training collaborations among colleagues in the School of Public Health and other units on the Berkeley campus.
Teaching will include responsibility for one or more courses in the following areas: Qualitative Methods, Mixed Methods, Survey Research, and Theories of Health and Social Behavior. In addition to graduate courses, there is also the opportunity to teach undergraduate students.
Serve as an advisor to students enrolled in the masters and doctoral programs in the School of Public Health. Supervise doctoral and postdoctoral research in the School of Public Health. Participate in the Health and Social Behavior Program and the Division of Community Health and Human Development.
Perform appropriate committee and professional service within and outside the University. Assist in fostering collaboration with state and local agencies and community-based organizations in the development of programs and policies to improve the health of California residents.
Compensation
Salary level will depend on experience and individual qualifications.
