Creating an Endowment
The School of Public Health offers many opportunities for establishing and naming endowed funds. The principal of an endowment is held intact in perpetuity and invested. Some earnings are reinvested each year so that the principal grows and retains it purchasing power. The remaining earnings, generally about 4-5 percent of the principal, provide a steady flow of income for the purposes designated by the donor.
By setting minimum gift levels for certain types of endowments, the University ensures that sufficient income is available annually to support their designated purpose. Endowments may be named for the donor or, if the donor so chooses, in memory or honor of someone special, such as a relative, friend, or faculty member.
Named endowment funds may be established with the following gifts:
Endowed Faculty Funds
Chancellor's Endowed Chair
$5 million+
Full salary support, as well as funds for research, teaching, and other purposes for a tenured faculty member who is internationally renowned in his or her field
Distinguished Endowed Chair
$3 million+
Full salary support, as well as funds for research, teaching, and other purposes for a tenured faculty member
Endowed Chair
$2 million+
Partial salary support, as well as funds for research, teaching, and other purposes for a tenured faculty member
Endowed Professorship
$1 million+
Partial salary support, as well as professional and research-related expenses, for a non-tenured faculty member who is building his or her academic reputation
Faculty Excellence Endowed Fund
$500,000+
Financial incentives to recruit and retain preeminent faculty, with allocations made by campus leaders
Endowed Fellowship Funds
Berkeley Endowed Fellowship
$500,000+
Full financial support for the education and research of one graduate student
Endowed Scholarship Funds
Berkeley Endowed Scholarship
$250,000+
Full financial support foro the education of one undergraduate student by alleviating work/loan contributions
Endowed Fund
$50,000+
Partial financial support for the education of one or several undergraduate students
